The construction of the SOS Children?s Village Assomada was finished in 1984. The official opening ceremony took place in October 1984. Shortly before that date, the first children moved into their new homes. The SOS Children's Village Assomada is located on the island of Santiago, the largest of nine inhabited Cape Verde Islands. From the little town of Assomada, which lies on a plateau, it is only about 40 km to Praia, the capital of Cap Verde. The SOS Children's Village borders directly on the town. To the west, one has a superb view of the mountains. A market place, a hospital and a church are within walking distance from the SOS Children's Village.
The SOS Children's Village Assomada consists of ten family houses, an administrative building (which houses a small shop and an infirmary) and a workshop. The SOS Kindergarten comprises four levels. It also accommodates children from the surrounding area. Since the SOS Kindergarten is the only one in Assomada, it is evident that the demand for accommodation is high. In 1988, an SOS Youth Facility, a place where elder SOS youths get prepared for their independence, was added to the SOS Children's Village.
