Bangui has about 520,000 inhabitants and is the only important city in the Central African Republic. Bagui is located on the banks of the river Oubangui about 1800 km from the next harbour in Congo. The SOS Children's Village Bangui is situated in the western district of Gbangouma between the hills of Gbazabangui and the river Oubangui about 6 km from the centre of the city. The population of this part of the town is a very mixed one: top civil servants and foreign ambassadors took up residence on the river-side, whilst fishermen, farmers, lowly clerks and military personnel from the nearby military base live in the hills. Within easy reach of the SOS Children's Village there are kindergartens, primary and secondary schools, a market, a mission station and a hospital.
The SOS Children's Village Bangui was built on a site of 7 hectares and consists of an administrative building, 11 family houses, an SOS Kindergarten for about 100 children from the SOS Children's Village itself as well as from the neighbourhood, an SOS Primary school with 12 class-rooms, which is attended by about 500 children, an SOS Medical Centre and facilities for sports. A small kitchen garden in order to provide the SOS Children's Village with fresh supplies of vegetables has also been laid out.
