Our Facilities
The decisive impulse for building an SOS Children's Village in Belarus was the Chernobyl nuclear disaster of 26 April 1986. After first negotiations in 1990, a plot of land in Borovljany, some 20 km northeast of the Belarusian capital Minsk, was put at the disposal of the SOS Children's Villages in 1991. Construction work on the SOS Children's Village and on the auxiliary SOS Social Centre, catering for children in need of medical assistance as a consequence of the Chernobyl disaster, started in June 1992.
Due to difficulties such as delays in the procurement of building materials, the SOS Children's Village was not completed until the summer of 1995. Shortly afterwards, the first children moved in. The SOS Social Centre was finished by the end of 1995. On 22 April 1998 both facilities were officially opened in the presence of members of the Belarusian government and numerous guests of honour.
The construction of a second SOS Children's Village in Belarus, in Marina Gorka, is planned for the years to come.
