In the Indian state of Madhaya Pradesh, the work of SOS Children's Villages began in 1987 following a terrible poison-gas accident in the city of Bhopal. Numerous children had lost their parents in this disaster. However, they are not the only children in this part of India who need help. In 1989, the first families moved into the family houses of the SOS Children's Village Bhopal.
The SOS Children's Village Bhopal is situated about 8 km from the city centre. There is a market, a school and a hospital close by. The SOS Children's Village consists of 16 family houses, a multi-purpose hall, some administrative buildings, staff quarters and a workshop. There are two SOS Youth Facilities where the older children are prepared for independence. The SOS Children's Village has its own sports field. There is also an SOS Kindergarten, an SOS Medical Centre and an SOS Social Centre for Mother and Child. These facilities are open to the neighbourhood population as well.
