The SOS Children's Village Brasília was built in 1968. About 1,5 million people live in Brasília, the artificially created Brazilian capital which was founded only in the mid-fifties. Two thirds of them live in the enormous slum-areas on the outskirts of the city. The SOS Children's Village is situated in the north of the city and consists of 10 family houses and a Community House. There is also an SOS Kindergarten and a dental surgery at the SOS Children's Village. Both SOS facilities are open to the population of the surrounding area and are most appreciated. All of the children attend local public schools. An SOS Youth Home for boys and a Girls' Residence were built for the grown-up boys and girls, who continue their education. The grown-up youngsters live here during the time of their vocational training or higher school education while they are getting ready to take their first steps into independence. Not only the young people from the SOS Children's Village, but also young people from the vicinity can benefit from vocational training according to their abilities which is offered in three workshops and the bakery.
