The work of SOS-Kinderdorf International in Brazil started in 1968 with the construction of the SOS Children's Villages in Porto Alegre and Poá. In November 1968, the SOS Children's Village Brasília was put in operation. It was followed by the SOS Children's Village São Bernardo do Campo in 1971, Goioerê in 1977 and Rio Grande do Norte and Santa Maria in 1978. Just one year later, in 1979, the construction work of the SOS Children's Village Bahia was started and in 1980, two more SOS Children's Villages were erected, namely Jacarepaguá as the first SOS Children's Village in Rio de Janeiro and Rio Bonito in São Paulo.
The construction of these SOS Children's Villages was followed by those of Juiz de Fora and Paraíba in 1982. In 1992, SOS-Kinderdorf International decided to build a second SOS Children's Village in Rio de Janeiro, called Pedra Bonita, in 1994, the corner stone of the SOS Children's Village Amazonas was laid in Manaus and finally, in April 1997, the construction work of the most recent SOS Children's Village Bahia in Lauro de Freitas next to the city of Salvador de Bahia was started in order to substitute the SOS Children's Village of the same name erected in 1979.
