Already himself supported the idea of the French SOS Promoting Association to start with SOS Children's Village activities in Burkina Faso. However, political unrest and government reshuffles between 1980 and 1983 made the first activities of SOS Children's Village International very difficult. Nevertheless, an agreement with the government of Burkina Faso was signed already at that time. Following another coup d'état plans for construction of an SOS Children's Village in Burkina Faso were to be given up. In 1991, the French SOS Promoting Association was again contacted by people from Burkina Faso who were interested in the work of SOS Kinderdorf International. In February 1992, the Minister of Social Affairs officially requested the former SOS Children's Village project to be reactivated. Following numerous visits by official representatives of SOS Children's Village in Burkina Faso a new agreement about the construction of an SOS Children's Village was signed on July 7, 1993.

In 1994 a suitable plot of land was found near the center of the capital. It is located 10 km north of the town center in the community of Polosgo. In 1995 the possesory right was transferred to SOS Children's Village International. In the very same year construction works started. Due to various problems they were not finished until 1997. At the end of 1997, the SOS Children's Village Ouagadougou accomodated 100 children and was nearly fully occupied.
