The work of SOS-Kinderdorf International in Burundi started in 1976 when a piece of land in Mushasha (province of Gitega) and an old building were given to SOS-Kinderdorf International in which, at the beginning, the SOS Kindergarten was housed. In 1977, construction of the actual SOS Children's Village in Gitega was begun. In 1979, the first children moved into the SOS Children's Village Gitega. In 1984, construction started on SOS Children's Village Bujumbura. It was officially inaugurated in the presence of at the end of December 1985. On this occasion, he promised the government authorities to build a third SOS Children's Village in the country.

In 1992, a site (20 ha) in the province of Muyinga was donated to SOS-Kinderdorf International to this purpose. Due to the bloodshed in Burundi in October 1993 and the civil war in Rwanda it was imperative for SOS-Kinderdorf International to take quick action.
Many refugee camps were set up in the province of Muyinga which received a large number of abandoned children for who SOS-Kinderdorf International tried to find a provisional solution. Therefore, SOS-Kinderdorf International set up a makeshift accomodation for these children within the framework of the SOS Emergency Relief Programme. Due to the embargo which was imposed against the country, it was not possible to start construction of the SOS Children's Village Muyinga before September 1996 and remove the children there before 1998. Besides, SOS-Kinderdorf International started to operate SOS Primary Schools in Gitega (1996), Bujumbura (1997) and Muyinga (1999). In addition to that, SOS Kindergartens and various SOS Youth Facilities were annexed to each SOS Children's Village as well.
