The work of SOS-Kinderdorf International in Cameroon started in 1986 when the first negotiations about the construction of an SOS Children's Village in Cameroon took place. A general co-operation agreement was signed on 5 January 1990 by the government of Cameroon and SOS-Kinderdorf International. Construction works on the SOS Children's Village Mbalmayo started in October 1994 and were finished in 1997. The first children were admitted into the SOS Children's Village in March 1998. In 1995, an SOS Kindergarten was adapted on private premises with a capacity of 50 children. In 1997, the SOS Kindergarten was moved to a new building within the SOS Children's. At present it has a capacity of 180 children. In the same year the SOS School started to operate.

The SOS Medical Centre was opened in September 1998 on the premises of the SOS Children's Village. The SOS Medical Centre provides medical care to the SOS children, staff and neighbourhood, information on sanitary and nutritional matters. Vaccinations and blood tests are also carried out. In addition, there is a mother/child ward. The official opening of the SOS Children's Village took place in the year 2000. The construction of a second SOS Children's Village in Marouna is planned.
