The third SOS Children's Village in Haïti has been set up at a distance of 6 km from the town of Cap Haïtien. The zone has a very low population density and is mainly used for agriculture. Cap Haïtien with its approximately 60,000 inhabitants is the second most important town of the country. Its economic importance is based on two facts: The harbour and the only place of interest for tourists in the country, the citadel of La Ferrière.
The SOS Children's Village Cap Haïtien has been set up on a large building site of 16 000 sqm. It includes the family houses and the standard community facilities of an SOS Children's Village. Approximately half of the site is used for farming and gardening. On the same area has been erected a building which houses an SOS Youth Facility and an SOS Training Centre. The last one offers professional training for 200 youngsters (50 places are reserved for children from the SOS Children's Village, the rest for the youngsters from the neighbourhood.) In the different workshops the young people train for the job of locksmith, tailor, joiner, plumber, electrician, car mechanic, refrigeration engineer and hairdresser.
There is also an SOS Primary and Secondary School with a capacity for up to 200 pupils as well as an SOS Kindergarten, both of which are open to the children from the Children's Village as well as to the children of the neighbourhood.
