The work of SOS-Kinderdorf International in the Central African Republic started in 1988 when Central African authorities underlined the desire to build an SOS Children's Village in this country. On 12 October 1988 an agreement was signed between SOS-Kinderdorf International represented by the Regional Director Mr. Klaus Keller and the Central African government. The cornerstone of the first Central African SOS Children's Village was laid on 5 March 1990 under the patronage of the President of the country, Mr. André Kolibanga.

In April 1992, construction work was finished and the very same year 17 children found a new home at the SOS Children's Village Bangui. In 1995, an SOS Youth House for boys was opened where young people from the SOS Children's Village stay during their higher educational training or vocational training in order to prepare themselves step by step to live an independent life outside the SOS Children's Village.
