The decision to construct an SOS Children's Village in Choluteca was based on the following two facts: the growing number of orphans and neglected children in the region and the necessity to continue the SOS-Relief Programme "Mitch". The construction of the SOS Children's Village started on 2nd November 1999. The works on the large building site (21,000 sqm.), which is located at a distance of 1.5 km from the little Town of Guasable (near the Nicaraguan border) and 136 km from Tegucigalpa, took until October 2000. In November the first children could move into their new homes. The Village consists of 10 family houses, which provide a home for up to one hundred children, an administrative building, the house of the Village Director, a multifunctional building, a guesthouse and a pavilion.

Simultaneously to the construction of the SOS Children's Village, an SOS-Kindergarten was erected. It consists of two classrooms, a library and a number of play rooms. According to the national school year, the Kindergarten (which offers education in small groups) is open from February to November for 75 children from the Village and the neighbourhood.
