The work of SOS-Kinderdorf International in Colombia started in 1970 with the construction of the first Colombian SOS Children's Village in the capital of Bogotá, which was inaugurated in August 1971. In 1986, the second SOS Children's Village was erected in Ibagué. This SOS Children's Village comprises an SOS Social Centre, an SOS Day Care Centre, an SOS School and a Medical Centre. An SOS Vocational Training and Production Centre which is run as a farm, was opened in October 1987 in Armero.

At the end of 1990, the SOS Social Centre Bogotá was inaugurated. The aim of the SOS Social Centre Bogotá is to help street children and their mothers to find a way to normal life with a roof over their head. In 1996, the construction of the SOS Children's Village Rionegro near Medellín started and was finished in 1997. Finally, in September 1998 the corner stone of the most recent Colombian SOS Children's Village was laid in Bucaramanga and just one year later, in September 1999, the first families moved in.
