Due to the tremendous social and economic problems which the people living in and around the city of Abidjan had to face, the French priest, "Father Martin", started to organise help for needy children in 1962. At first, he created a dwelling for about 15 abandoned children in an empty house in Treichville near Abidjan. Later, he set up the "Village of Friendship" 15 km from the centre of Abidjan with the help of the government of Côte d'Ivoire.
In 1970, for the first time, "Father Martin" and met to talk about cooperating. In 1971, "Father Martin" joined the umbrella organisation of SOS-Kinderdorf International with his project in Abobo Gare. Thus, "Father Martin's" children's village in Abobo Gare became the first SOS Children's Village in Côte d'Ivoire. In 1980 co-workers of SOS Children's Village Côte d'Ivoire became aware of a special social problem in the region of Aboisso, situated in the southeast of the country.
In that region, according to tradition, it is customary to abandon the tenth child of each family as people think that these children bring bad luck. This prompted SOS Children's Village International to start construction of the second SOS Children's Village in Côte d'Ivoire. After three years of construction the first children could move into their new homes.
