The SOS Children's Village Davao was officially opened in 1982. It is located near the main road which connects the city centre of Davao with the airport. It is approximately 10 minutes by car from the city centre. Davao is the largest city in the island of Mindanao. The SOS Children's Village is situated on a hill and surrounded by a group of very old trees.
The SOS Children's Village Davao consists of 14 family houses, the Village Director's house and a community house. The smaller children are looked after at the SOS Kindergarten, which is also open to children from the neighbourhood. In 1985, an SOS School was built in Davao. It is operated and managed by the Holy Cross of Davao. The SOS Children's Village staff operate an SOS Social Centre for Mother and Child as well as a dental and medical clinic. These facilities provide essential medical care to the population of the surrounding area. The SOS Social Centre includes a day-care centre, where children of working mothers are taken care of. In 1989, the SOS Youth Village for boys was opened. Teenaged boys from the SOS Children's Village move there to prepare for their independent lives while they are still at school, college or university, or doing vocational training.
