The SOS Children's Village Esperanza is located on the main road leading from Lima to the Andes, 40 km from Lima and only 400 m from the SOS Children's Village Rio Hondo at an altitude of 1000 m. The SOS Children's Village borders on the road and on the river Rimac. The climate is very dry, but as the river carries sufficient water for irrigation, it was possible to lay out banana and avocado plantations as well as vegetable gardens.
The SOS Children's Village comprises 7 family houses, a Village Director's house, a Community House and additional buildings, as well as a small store. The SOS Kindergarten also serves the children of the neighbourhood. In addition to that, some of the buildings are used as an SOS Training Centre for SOS mothers, some of the houses serve as transit homes for children who stay at the SOS Children's Village for just some time. The children attend private schools as the local schools are overcrowded and the education standards are very low. A canteen which provides a daily warm meal for children and teenagers from the neighbourhood, is one of the social activities run by the SOS Children's Village.
