In the mid 90s planning for the construction of a second SOS Children's Village began. A suitable site was acquired in Francistown, a city in the Northeast of Botswana, and in 1997 the cornerstone for the second SOS Children's Village in Botswana was laid. On 17 March 1999 the Village was officially inaugurated in the presence of honorary guests Princess Benedikte of Denmark and her husband Prince Richard, Minister Kwelagobe of Botswana and many other participants.

The SOS Children's Village Francistown is located in the suburban area of Francistown, which has 60000 inhabitants and which is the second largest city of Botswana. The houses are built in a simple way adapted to local traditions. The site was made available to SOS by the government. The Danish Promoting and Supporting Association of SOS financed the construction of the first 12 houses of the Village and of the SOS Kindergarten.

The SOS Children's Village Francistown comprises 15 family houses and since summer 1998 there is also a SOS Kindergarten to which the children of the community have access. Since the establishment of the SOS Children's Village Francistown an increasing number of children have found a new home there and live in peace in their new houses surrounded by big and shady trees.
