In 1998, there was heavy fighting in the vicinity of the SOS Children's Village. Therefore, all children and staff were evacuated immediately, first to the stadium of Bissau and then to a school building. Finally, they were taken abroad to the SOS Children's Village Bakoteh in Gambia to be absolutely safe. They had to stay there for almost one year until the situation in Guinea-Bissau had come back to normal thus enabling them to move into their homes again. During the civil war an SOS Emergency Relief Programme was carried out for people who had suffered most during the war. After the war, SOS Children's Village International built three houses for needy families in the vicinity of the village which was especially heavily damaged during the war.

The SOS Children's Village Gabú is situated in the provincial town having the same name, about 200 km east of Bissau. The official opening ceremony took place on October 29, 2001, in the presence of the Social Minister, Mrs Filomena Tipote. The SOS Children's Village Gabú consists of ten family houses, Village Director's house, house for the SOS aunts, guesthouse, house for the guards, house for the generator, African hut (for social, educational and cultural activities), garage and sports ground. The nearby SOS School, which accommodates two Kindergarten classes and two primary school classes, was finished together with the construction of the SOS Children's Village.
