First negotiations on the erection of an SOS Children's Village in Georgia took place in the years 1988 to 1990 and in 1991, the work on the construction of the SOS Children's Village Tbilisi started. Construction was, however, hampered by the instable economical and political conditions within Georgia. The admission of the first children took finally place in October 1996 and on 21 April 1998 the official opening ceremony was held in the presence of President Eduard Shevardnadze.

Only a few months later the construction of an SOS kindergarten started. The SOS kindergarten was put into operation in October 1999 and it is also open to the children from the neighbourhood.

The erection of an SOS Youth Facility is planned, where the youths will stay during their education or vocational training and will prepare themselves under the guidance of the youth leaders to leading an independent life. Moreover, a second SOS Children's Village in Georgia, in Kutaisi, in the western part of the country, will be built. The cornerstone laying took place in January 2001.
