The second Rwandan SOS Children's Village Gikongoro was completed in 1992 in the south of the country, approximately 160 km from Kigali, in the town of the same name. Gikongoro can be easily reached by the motor way Butare-Gikongoro-Cyangugu.

The SOS Children's Village Gikongoro consists of 12 family houses each of which can accommodate up to 10 children. Besides the administrative buildings, there is also a community centre, an SOS Kindergarten and an SOS School (primary school) which is attended by about 20 children from the SOS Children's Village and by about 170 children from the neighbourhood.
