The SOS Children's Village Gitega is situated 4 km from the city centre. Gitega is the former residence of the king and the third largest town of the country, with a population of 10.000. The SOS Children's Village comprises 10 family houses, a building with staff quarters, a tailor's workshop, a laundry, a large multi-purpose hall, SOS Youth Houses for girls and boys and the SOS Kindergarten which is also attended by children from the surrounding area. In addition, there is an SOS vocational school where those teenagers, who cannot be admitted into secondary school, can learn a trade. Young people can also be trained in carpentry.
