In 1979 the second Portuguese SOS Children's Village was opened in the little village of Gulpilhares which is located at a distance of 2 kms from the sea. The SOS Children's Village Gulpilhares has been set up on a hilly building site with many pine trees and eucalyptus. It consists of the family houses, a community house,

In 1979 the second Portuguese SOS Children's Village was opened in the little village of Gulpilhares which is located at a distance of 2 kms from the sea. The SOS Children's Village Gulpilhares has been set up on a hilly building site with many pine trees and eucalyptus. It consists of the family houses, a community house, the Village Director's house and an SOS Youth Facility (The older children move there, in order to prepare for their independent life.)

The SOS Children's Village Gulpilhares runs its own SOS Kindergarten, which is also open to the children from the neighborhood. The children from the SOS Children's Village attend public primary and secondary schools in the vicinity.
