SOS Children's Villages began its work in the Indian state of Assam, in the north-east of India, in 1983, after many families had been separated and numerous children had lost their parents during the violent clashes between the local population and immigrants from Bangladesh and West Bengal. The third SOS Children's Village in Assam was erected in a residential area near the airport of the capital of this state.
The SOS Children's Village Guwahati consists of 16 family homes, the Village Director's house, a multi-purpose hall, staff quarters and various administrative buildings. There is also a playground. The SOS Children's Village opened its doors to the first children in 1988.
The smaller children are looked after at the SOS Kindergarten. The older girls and boys usually move to the respective SOS Youth Houses. These are rented houses for teenagers who are in the middle of their education or training. They are prepared for their independent lives at the SOS Youth Houses.
The SOS clinic provides medical care not only for the inhabitants of the SOS Children's Village but also for the people of the neighbourhood. In the nearby villages, there are primary and secondary schools. By attending the local schools, the children of the SOS Children's Village will be better able to integrate into society later on.
