The cornerstone of the SOS Children's Village Hai Phong was laid in November 1994. The first children moved in in August 1996. Hai Phong is an economically very important port situated 103 km east of Hanoi. The SOS Children's Village Hai Phong consists of 14 family houses, an office building, a community house and staff quarters. It is located in the town centre, near the market and the hospital.There is an SOS Kindergarten, which offers up to 200 places to children who mainly come from the neighbourhood. In 2000, the SOS School opened its doors. It offers classes up to secondary level and is attended by children from the SOS Children's Village as well as from local families. The SOS Social Centre caters to the needs of the local population as well. Working mothers can take their children there and they are taken care of during the day. Older youths from the SOS Children's Village usually move to the SOS Youth Facility, where they are prepared for their independent lives.
