In 1987, the foundation stone was laid for the second Thai SOS Children's Village at Hatyai. The site, a former rubber plantation, measures 3.6 hectares and is situated 20 km outside the city centre, on the main road to Malaysia and about 30 km from the border. Hatyai is the capital of the South and a large trading centre, with a great deal of cross-border traffic to and from Malaysia. The biggest university of the South is on the outskirts of Hatyai.
The SOS Children's Village consists of twelve family houses, the Village Director's house and another building containing staff quarters and a guest house. There is also a community centre, which houses offices, a workshop, and an SOS Kindergarten. The SOS Kindergarten is open to children from the neighbourhood. In 1993, the SOS Youth House at Songkhla was inaugurated. Here 24 young men who are studying or undergoing vocational training are accommodated together with two educators. This is their first step towards independence.
