SOS Children's Village began its work in the Indian state of Assam, in the north-east of India, in 1983, after many families had been separated and numerous children had lost their parents during the violent clashes between the local population and immigrants from Bangladesh and West Bengal. The SOS Children's Village Hojai was opened in 1984. It is located on the outskirts of the city of Hojai, 180 km east of Guwahati, the capital of Assam.
In addition to the 22 family houses, the Village Director's house, a multi-purpose hall and an administrative building with a small shop, there is an SOS Kindergarten. The older children attend schools in the vicinity of the SOS Children's Village, which helps to integrate them into the neighbourhood. On the premises of the SOS Children's Village, there are two SOS Youth Houses where the older boys stay during their education or vocational training. There they are prepared for independence. In the town of Nagaon, which is 60 km from Hojai and offers better infrastructure, there is another SOS Youth House in a rented building.
