The first steps to build an SOS Children's Village in Honduras were taken in 1968. Two years later the first SOS Children's Village which is situated in the capital of Tegucigalpa opened its doors to the orphaned and abandoned children of the country. Soon, other SOS Children's Villages had to be erected; as a result of the social situation and the consequences of several natural catastrophes, there was a constantly growing demand for permanent homes, where children could grow up in a safe and loving atmosphere. In 1974, the second SOS Children's Village was built in San Pedro Sula. After terrible inundations had hit the region around Tela, the decision was made to build a third SOS Children's Village there. Its inauguration took place in 1979.
During the 1980s two more SOS Children's Villages were built, the SOS Children's Village La Ceiba and the SOS Children's Village San José for handicapped children. During the 1990s three new SOS Children's Villages were erected: A new SOS Children's Village in San Pedro Sula, the SOS Children's Village Valle de Ángeles for handicapped children and the SOS Children's Village Choluteca, the construction of which had become necessary after the hurricane Mitch had hit the region in 1998.
