Our Facilities
In 1963, met the then Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru. Both Nehru and his daughter Indira Gandhi were impressed with the SOS concept and assured Gmeiner that he would have the full support and co-operation of the Indian government. A committee chaired by Indira Gandhi was formed.
On 12 May 1964, 'SOS Children's Villages of India' was registered as a society under the Societies Registration Act of 1860. A society registered under this act has its own statutes and is entitled to carry out welfare activities in all the states of India. The construction of the first SOS Children's Village in India, the SOS Children's Village Greenfields, started in 1967. The first families moved in in 1968; Indira Gandhi officially opened this SOS Children's Village on 22 January 1971.
