Our Facilities
During a study visit to Austria in 1969, Mr Agus Prawoto, an Indonesian and future head of SOS Children's Villages Indonesia, became acquainted with the ideas of SOS Children's Villages and its facilities. Once Mr Prawoto had completed his studies, he worked at one of the Austrian SOS Children's Villages for some months. His wish was to give orphans and abandoned children of his country the safety and security of a home at an SOS Children's Village.
In 1970, Mr Prawoto returned to Indonesia with his family and immediately started preparing the construction of the first SOS Children's Village at Lembang-Bandung, West Java. In those days, after the suppression of the communist putsch in 1965, it was very difficult for a foreign organization to establish itself in Indonesia. Therefore it would probably not have been possible to start an SOS Children's Village without the help of Mr. Prawoto. SOS Desa Taruna (SOS Children's Villages Indonesia) was founded in 1971 and became a member of SOS-Kinderdorf International. The first children moved into the SOS Children's Village Lembang in September 1972.
