SOS Children's Villages International started its activities in Jordan after a meeting of the then Austrian Prime Minister, Bruno Kreisky and with Her Majesty Queen Noor Al-Hussein of Jordan. The goal of SOS was to improve and further general care for children in Jordan as well as to give them a good education. On February 13, 1983, an agreement about SOS activities was signed by the Jordanian government and SOS Children's Village International.

In October 1984, the cornerstone of the first SOS Children's Village in Jordan was laid. In 1986, the construction of the SOS Children's Village Amman was completed and the first children moved in. In 1990, construction on the second SOS Children's Village in Jordan, in the seaport Aqaba in southern Jordan, was begun. In the very same year the SOS Vocational Training and Production Centre for carpentry in Amman was opened. In 1991, the SOS Children's Village Aqaba was opened. A decision of principle for the construction of the SOS Children's Village in Irbid was taken in September 1997. The third SOS Children's Village in Jordan was completed in 1999.
