On the occasion of her official visit to Germany in July 1992, Mrs Sarah Nazarbajeva, first lady of Kazakhstan, visited the SOS Children's Village Diessen on Ammerlake. She was enthusiastic about the idea of SOS-Kinderdorf International and inspired by the idea of building a SOS Children's Village in Kazakhstan. She approached SOS-Kinderdorf International and soon the decision was made to start working in Kazakhstan. In 1994 the local authorities of Almaty handed over an about 3 hectares plot of land in a quiet residential area to the SOS Children's Village Association of Kazakhstan and on 29 October 1994 the official cornerstone-laying took place. The first children were admitted to the SOS Children's Village Almaty in summer 1997 and on 27 July 1999 the official opening ceremony was held.

In autumn 1998 the approval on the construction of a second SOS Children's Village in Astana was given. The local authorities of Astana donated a 4 hectares plot of land and on 28 July 1999 the foundation stone was officially laid. In July 2000 the first families moved into the second Kazakh SOS Children's Village, Astana. The official opening ceremony was held on 23 June 2001 in presence of the president of Kazakhstan as well as the president and the secretary general of SOS-Kinderdorf International. The erection of the third kazak SOS Children's Village in Temirtau is planned.
