The first SOS Children's Village was built on a hill, 10 km from the capital, Kigali, which has about 155.000 inhabitants. It is situated in the centre of a densely populated agrarian area with many individual farms.
The SOS Children's Village Kigali comprises 15 family houses, an administrative building, staff quarters, a house for aunts, a pre-school building and a canteen. The SOS Kindergarten is attended by children from the vicinity too. Not far from the SOS Children's Village, an SOS Medical Centre and an SOS Primary School were erected. These facilities are also attended by people from other parts of the town. Electric power for the SOS Children's Village is produced by a solar and biogas unit. In 1983, an SOS Youth Village was constructed which consists of seven houses. The youths living there have to take on more responsibility for their lives and gradually learn to prepare themselves for living independently during their higher educational and vocational training.
