Millions of Hindus from then East Pakistan fled to India during the war of liberation in 1971, when Bangladesh emerged as an independent state. In order to try to help the numerous orphans, an SOS Children's Village was set up at Bidhannagar, Salt Lake City, east of the city of Kolkata (Calcutta) in 1975. The first children could move into this SOS Children's Village in 1977.
The SOS Children's Village Kolkata consists of 20 family houses, a Village Director's house, a multi-purpose hall, staff quarters and various administrative buildings. Ten of the twenty family houses are now used as SOS Youth Houses for girls who are still doing their training or who are already working but are not married yet. Furthermore, there is an SOS Social Centre with a medical ward and an SOS Home for Retired Mothers. The children attend the schools of the vicinity. 22 km from the SOS Children's Village, there is an SOS Youth House for boys.
