The SOS Children's Village La Caņada was erected in the village of El Topito about 35 km south of Maracaibo. Maracaibo with its approx. 900.000 inhabitants is the second largest city of Venezuela and is situated in the north western part of the country at the lake Maracaibo.
The SOS Children's Village La Caņada was built on a 5 hectares site and consists of 14 family houses, a Village Director's house and a house for SOS aunts, a Community Centre and a study room, as well as an infirmary and a training centre for SOS staff. The SOS Kindergarten and the SOS Day Care Centre are also open to the children of the neighbourhood. An elementary school is located only 3 minutes from the SOS Children's Village, and secondary schools are in the immediate vicinity. An SOS Youth House for boys and another one for girls were also opened, providing accommodation for young people from all three Venezuelan SOS Children's Villages. Vegetable gardens and banana groves were laid out in order to further the self-sufficiency of the SOS Children's Village.
