The SOS Children's Village Lockport is located in a distance of about 50 km southeast of Chicago in the Federal State of Illinois. Illinois is one of the northern states of the Middle West and located southeast of Lake Michigan. Chicago with its approx. 3 million inhabitants (8 million in Greater Chicago) is the third largest city of the United States and an important industrial, financial and commercial centre of the country. Its location right next to numerous waterways and canals have made Chicago an important traffic junction and Chicago O'Hare International Airport, due to the number of passengers per year, is one of the largest in the world.
The decision of constructing the SOS Children's Village Lockport was taken in 1988 and in 1992, the corner-stone ceremony took place. Already in 1993, the construction of the SOS Children's Village was completed. It consists of ten two-story family houses, the house of the Village Director, a workshop, an office building and a community centre with rooms for ceremonies and other social activities. A playground is situated right on the terrain of the SOS Children's Village, too.
