Today, a fifth of the 6 million inhabitants of the country live in Santo Domingo. The important harbour on the south coast of the Dominican Republic is the country's economic and administrative heart and also a university centre. There is an ever growing number of tourists who arrive at the international airport of Santo Domingo every year in order to spend their holidays in the small republic on the historic island of Hispaniola.
The construction of the third SOS Children's Village Santiago de los Caballeros started in 2002, exactly two decades after the first SOS Children's Village of the Dominican Republic had opened its doors and a whole generation of children had grown up and become independent. The SOS Children's Village Los Mina is situated in the densely populated quarter of Los Mina, next to a very large slum area. It consists of the 17 family houses, a big community house which houses the Village Director's appartment, an SOS Medical Care Centre, an SOS Kindergarten and an SOS Primary School.
The SOS Primary School offers places for up to 420 pupils. Lessons are given from morning to afternoon. In addition to the official curriculum, other interesting subjects such as Creative Working, Musical Education, Typewriting etc. are taught. The SOS Primary School is also open to the children from the neighborhood as well as the SOS Medical Care Centre which offers pediatric, gynecological and dental treatment. In addition to that, there is a laboratory and a pharmacy.
