Our Facilities
Already in 1986, a field study was carried out by SOS-Kinderdorf International in Malawi. Five years later, in 1991, a government agreement between the government of Malawi and SOS-Kinderdorf International was signed and the corner stone for the first SOS Children's Village in Malawi, Lilongwe, was laid on 4 November 1992. Only two years later the first children moved in and in the following months, the SOS Primary School and the SOS Kindergarten were put into operation. The official opening ceremony of the SOS Children's Village Lilongwe took place on 12 September 1996. The same year, the construction work for the SOS Secondary School commenced, which opened its doors in 1998.
In autumn 1997, the decision was taken to establish a second SOS Children's Village in Malawi and in August 2000 the construction work started. The government donated a 8 hectares plot of land about 3 km from the city centre of Mzuzu, a city in the north of Malawi. Mzuzu is one of the larger towns in the country, situated on a high plateau surrounded by mountains.
