In Mali, the work of SOS Children's Village began in 1984, when an initial contract was signed between SOS-Kinderdorf International and the government of Mali. This agreement proposed the construction of three SOS Children's Villages in Mali. The French Promoting Association was given the task to carry out these projects.

The foundation stone of the SOS Children's Village Sanankoroba was laid in July 1986 on the piece of land donated by the authorities of Mali. In 1987, the first three families moved into the newly built SOS Children's Village to find a permanent and loving home.

After a long drought in the Sahel Zone (1987) the necessity of constructing a second SOS Children's Village became evident. However, due to political reasons the realization of the project had to be postponed until 1993. The official cornerstone ceremony of the SOS Children's Village Socoura/Mopti took place in 1994. In 1998, the new SOS Children's Village was inaugurated.
