The SOS Children's Village Mamelodi comprises 16 family houses and SOS Youth Houses, where youths live during the time of their vocational training or education and prepare themselves for an independent life under the guidance of their youth leaders. Furthermore, a kindergarten which is also open to the children from the neighbourhood, was erected. The SOS Children's Village Mamelodi concentrates not only on caring for abandoned children, but also on educating and training the people from the local community. A SOS Social Centre was put into operation, offering computer and tailoring courses to not only SOS children but also to people from the neighbourhood. Moreover, pedagogical assistance is offered to different day care centres. In 2002 an AIDS outreach programme was added, providing HIV/AIDS affected families with help and support.
