In 1995, a field study was carried out which revealed the necessity of the construction of a second SOS Children's Village in Madagascar. The construction of the SOS Children's Village Mangarano was finished in one year. It is located in Toamasina (Tamatave) the second largest city in Madagascar.
In 1998, a SOS Day Care Centre was opened in Anosibé, a suburb of Antananarivo. About 60 children of working mothers are taken care of during the day.
The SOS Children's Village Mangarano consists of 12 family houses, 6 of which have been finished by now. They are one-storeyed buildings which were constructed in a way so that they withstand cyclones which strike the island quite frequently. Further, the SOS Children's Village comprises apartments for the Village Director, the educator, the guardian and a SOS polyclinic which is naturally open to the public. The SOS Children's Village also comprises a SOS Kindergarten which is also open to the children from the neighbourhood.
