The SOS Children's Village Mantova is located in the Lombardy region with the regional capital Milan. Other major cities of the region are Como, Pavia, Bergamo, Brescia, Mantova and Cremona. Geographically, the region is characterised by the Alps on one hand and well known lakes like Lake Como, Lake Maggiore and Lake Garda on the other. The southern part of Lombardy is dominated by the river Po and a vast plain. Lombardy is considered one of Italy's most important regions in terms of economy and is at the same time one of the most densely populated ones. Agriculture and textile industries are the prime sources of income. The city of Mantova is the capital city of the province of the same name that together with the provinces of Bergamo, Brescia, Como, Cremona, Milan, Pavia, Sondrio and Varese constitute the region of Lombardy. Mantova has approx. 55,000 inhabitants. The SOS Children's Village Mantova was officially inaugurated on 1 October 1995 and was built in a suburb of Mantova on a site of 10,000 sq. m just opposite the Bosca Virgiliano Park. It consists of three houses with two big apartments each for altogether six SOS families, the house of the Village Director, two smaller apartments for temporary admission of mothers and children in need as well as offices and rooms for social activities. The SOS Children's Village is giving a loving home to a total number of about 40 children.
