The decision to build a new SOS Children's Village was based on two important facts: There is a growing number of children in need in the region and all the other Nicaraguan facilities are filled to capacity. The construction of the SOS Children's Village and the SOS Social Centre Matagalpa started in 1999. The works on the large building site (24,000 sqm.) on the outskirts of the town of Matagalpa took until the end of 2000.

The Village consists of 10 family houses, which provide a home for up to one hundred children, the house of the Village Director, a guesthouse and an administrative building with a multifunctional room. The SOS Social Centre includes a day care centre, a kindergarten, a library, classrooms for different workshops (computer, cosmetics, tailoring), a paediatric medical care centre, a dental practice - and last but not least - a kitchen and a laundry.
