The first Children's Village of the country was set up in La Villa de Guadalupe, a suburb of Mexico City, which is known for the Basilica of the Saint Virgin Guadalupe Hidalgo. The Children's Village Mexico City is located at a distance of approximately 700 m from this famous sight of the capital.
Mexico City, which is situated 2350 m above sea level, is one of biggest agglomerations in the world due to the strong afflux from rural regions and the high birth rate. Today, there are about 16 millions of people living in this mega city.
The SOS Children's Village Mexico City consists of the family houses, a community building, an administrative building, a village shop and different playgrounds. The SOS Children's Village runs its own SOS Kindergarten, which is also open to the children from the vicinity. There is also an SOS Youth Facility in the north of the Children's Village, which includes residences for girls and boys. The older children move to the SOS Youth Facility and there, they prepare for independent life taking more and more responsibilities. The SOS Youth Facility runs two workshops, where the young people can obtain vocational training in joining and batik. The adjoining SOS Medical Care Centre offers dental care for the poor people from the vicinity.
