The SOS Children's Village of Mombasa was constructed on the northern shore of the bay of Mombasa, 500 meters from the coast. It comprises 12 family houses, a Village Director's house, staff quarters, an administrative building, a small shop and a workshop. The SOS kindergarten is also attended by children from the neighbourhood. Each family house has a small garden, where fruit and vegetables are planted. The raising of goats, cows and geese makes an essential contribution towards the Village's self-sufficiency. In 1995 a large house was acquired and renovated at Maweni, approximately 4km from the SOS-Village. It is designed for youths in transit, as they leave the SOS-Village and before they rent property on their own.
