Activities of SOS Children's Villages in the country
In 1996, Mrs Monica Quaroni, wife of the Italian ambassador to Beijing, got in contact with SOS-Kinderdorf International and offered her support in the establishment of an SOS Children's Village in Mongolia. Within the following year, Mrs Quaroni succeeded in spreading the SOS Children's Villages idea in Mongolia and the wife of the Mongolian Prime Minister was amongst those interested in the project.
After the visit of a Mongolian delegation to several SOS Children's Village facilities in China in autumn 1997, SOS-Kinderdorf International was invited by the Mongolian Ministry of Health and Social Affairs to hold talks on the possibility of setting up an SOS Children's Village. A government agreement between SOS-Kinderdorf International and the government of Mongolia was signed in 1998 and a suitable plot of land was chosen in the Mongolian capital Ulaanbaatar.
In May 2000 construction work on the SOS Children's Village Ulaanbaatar commenced. Due to bureaucratic obstacles and as a result of extreme weather conditions the works were delayed. The construction work was completed in summer 2002.
