In autumn 1997, the decision was taken to establish a second SOS Children's Village in Malawi. The construction works commenced in August 2000 and were finished in early 2002. The government donated a 8 hectares plot of land about 3 km from the city centre of Mzuzu, a city in the north of Malawi. Mzuzu is one of the larger towns in the country, situated on a high plateau surrounded by mountains.
The SOS Children's Village Mzuzu comprises fifteen family houses, houses for the village director and the aunties, a guest house, staff quarters, a multipurpose hall and it will become the new home of 150 children. The ancillary SOS kindergarten consists of three classes and offers room to 75 children. The erection of a SOS School is planned for a second construction phase, which will offer primary school education to more than 600 children.
