The SOS Children's Village of Nairobi is located in the so-called "Eastlands", a district on the outskirts of Nairobi. The capital has grown rapidly and today has 1,5 million inhabitants. The SOS Children's Village of Nairobi was inaugurated in 1975. It comprises 15 family houses, a Village Director's house, an administrative building and a few additional buildings. The SOS kindergarten is also attended by the children of the vicinity.
Also belonging to the SOS Children's Village is a Youth Hostel and a polytechnic College which offers courses in carpentry and domestic science. In order to speed up the reintegration process of SOS youths a semi independent housing programme was started which enables youths to act independently in various files of life. A chicken farm provides not only for the SOS Children's Village's own requirements, but also brings extra income through the sale of eggs. The families contribute to their self-sufficiency by growing bananas, papaya and vegetables.
