Our Facilities
In 1989, first contacts with the representatives of Northern Cyprus were established with a view to building an SOS Children's Village in Northern Cyprus. At that point, Northern Cyprus was generally lacking a clear childcare concept, and the representatives showed great interest in reforming this area of social care by orientating on the idea of SOS-Kinderdorf International. In April 1992, the official cornerstone laying ceremony for building an SOS Children's Village with an SOS Kindergarten was held in the capital Lefkosa (Nikosia). The SOS Kindergarten started operating in September 1993, three months later the first children moved into their new home at the SOS Children's Village. Given SOS Children's Village Lefkosa's excellent reputation, local authorities were eager to place children with the SOS Children's Village instead of state-run orphanages to have them grow up in a family-like environment.
The SOS Children's Village soon had to be extended to include five more family houses. At the same time, there was a demand for a proper facility for accommodating and providing care to 30 youths. This is why an apartment house for girls was bought in 1997 in Lefkosa and construction work started to build an SOS Youth Facility for boys in Girne, a port located about 30 km from Lefkosa. In the summer of 2000, the girls also moved to the youth facility in Girne that had opened its doors in 1998 and provided for more space to take in the youths.
