Sri Lanka's second SOS Children's Village is located at Nuwara-Eliya in the central hill region, at an altitude of 2,000 m. The first children were admitted in 1984. Due to its high altitude, the SOS Children's Village enjoys a particularly cool climate, and the town of the same name is one of the island's favourite holiday resorts. That is why the children from the SOS Children's Village Piliyandala often spend their holidays at the holiday camp in Nuwara-Eliya.
The SOS Children's Village Nuwara Eliya consists of 10 family houses, a Community House and the necessary administrative buildings. There are also SOS Youth Facilities where older girls and boys can prepare for their independent lives. The SOS Social Centre and the SOS Kindergarten are open to the population of the neighbourhood. The SOS Social Centre also provides medical care and one of its aims is to raise the people's standard of nutrition, health and education.
At Malpotha, 45 km south of the SOS Children's Village, there is an SOS farm where older boys can learn how to grow fruit and vegetables and how to rear small animals for the local market.
