The second Russian SOS Children's Village is situated in the settlement Lavrovo, about 9 km from Orjol. The decision to construct the SOS Children's Village Orjol was motivated by the result of previous studies about the sad living conditions of orphans in the town of Orjol (approx. 500,000 inhabitants) in the heart of Russia, approx. 350 km south of Moscow. The about 3,500 inhabitants of Lavrovo live mainly on agriculture. Lavrovo offers very good infrastructure and all kinds of public schools and kindergartens.
The SOS Children's Village Orjol is surrounded by an apple orchard and comprises 12 family houses, an administrative building, the Village Director's house, an aunts' house, the staff quarters a community hall and a workshop. A playground is at the children's disposal. In autumn 2001 a SOS Youth Facility was added, where the youths live during the time of their vocational training or education and prepare themselves for an independent life under the guidance of their youth leaders.
